Soon to celebrate its second anniversary inside the clubhouse of McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links, Mangia by the Greens is fast garnering a reputation not just for fine culinary fare, but also for a variety of late-night leisure pursuits. Nearly every night of the week there’s something going on at Mangia, which is the latest business venture owned by Robin and Charlynn Waldron. The couple used to own establishments of similar names in Ocean City (Mangia by the Beach) and Somers Point (Mangia by the Bay), but sold both to channel their energies into their Egg Harbor Township enterprise.

DJ Bill spins hits every Friday at Mangia, and every Saturday night a revolving slate of cover bands performs in a dining-room stage area attached to the main bar, which is accessed opposite the clubhouse pro shop. In between the main bar/dining area and an outdoor tiki bar/deck is a more secluded dining room, which combines for a seating capacity of around 250. Local bands playing each Saturday (from 9pm-1am) include No Pressure, the Bullet, Revolver and Tidal Wave.

Every Wednesday from 8:30pm-1am is called “Open Musicians Night,” in which anyone so inspired is welcome to perform any style of music they choose, with the help of a backup house band.

“Whatever you want to do, you can come in and do it,” says Robin Waldron. “It’s like open mike night except its for musicians as well as singers. We mainly do it just to provide local musicians a place to jam in front of a live audience. It’s been working out well. People come in to dine and listen to the music, and they’re never sure if they’re going to be hearing jazz, modern rock, classic rock, blues — whatever.”

The popular interactive electronic game Quizzo is played every Tuesday, and poker tournaments have been taking place every Monday and Thursday nights. Two games are played each night at 7 and 10pm.

“We’re up to about 50 players, and they’re playing for a seat out in Vegas for a chance to win $10,000,” says Waldron. “It’s part of a league we joined that takes place across the country.”

Mangia’s outdoor tiki bar, overlooking a large pond that flanks the course’s 18th fairway, will remain open as long as the weather stays hospitable. The kitchen is always open during hours of operation, and delivery service is available in the surrounding EHT, Northfield, Linwood and Somers Point areas.

“We’ve gotten very popular with our late-night menu because we keep the kitchen open right up until we close,” says Waldron. “We’ve been getting a later crowd coming in at 11, 11:30 at night ordering bar food and snacks. As long as we’re open, they can get anything we serve.”

During football season, Mangia will offer a free buffet, discounted beer prices, and will give away a jersey after every Eagles game. With nine 52-inch plasma TVs, Mangia is a premier viewing place for pigskin action. Patrons can get in on a weekly football pool in which the winner — he or she who finishes with the best win-loss record — will win a 32-inch plasma TV at the end of the season.

Mangia not only aims to please the pro sports fan, it has lots of high-school and local sports memorabilia hanging on its walls, including one of the oars from a championship-winning Holy Spirit High School crew team.

“We want to show support for our local scholastic athletes, and make this place feel comfortable not just for the adults but for the kids also,” says Waldron. “It’s nice when a 14-year-old kid comes in and says ‘There’s my jersey on the wall,’ or ‘There’s my team photo from when we won the championship.’”

Another artifact adorning one of the walls is a framed and signed guitar, but not one hailing from a local performer.

“My son David is an assistant casting director [in New York City], and helped do a fundraiser for Mariska [Hargitay, who plays detective Olivia Benson] on Law & Order: SVU,” explains Waldron. “After the fundraiser was over the whole cast of the show signed the guitar, and David gave it to me to hang up in the bar.”

Robin and Charlynn’s two younger sons, Zachary and Cole, are currently helping to carry on the family business.
